What problems does prototyping solve?

Prototyping mainly solves five problems:

What is CAD modelling?

CAD modelling is the creation of a three-dimensional jewellery model using specialist software. It is suitable for jewellery with complex structures, high symmetry requirements, and the need for precise dimensional control.

Advantages:

  2. Easy to modify.
  3. Suitable for repeated confirmation.
  4. It can control the ring size, setting, and accent-stone positions.
  5. Suitable for integration with 3D printing and casting.

Limitations:

  1. Screen results may look more perfect than the actual piece.

What is a wax model?

A wax model is a wax prototype made according to the design, used for the client to confirm three-dimensional proportions and often as the model before casting.

A wax model can help the client assess:

  1. The ring’s front-view size.
  2. The ring’s height.
  3. The thickness of the shank.
  4. The wearing proportion.
  5. The overall silhouette.

But a wax model is not the finished piece. It does not have the final metal lustre, gemstone fire, or setting details, so it cannot fully determine the finished aesthetic.

What is a silver model?

A silver model is a sample made from silver or another lower-cost metal, often used for complex high-end bespoke pieces or orders requiring a real-life try-on.

Silver models are suitable for:

  1. High-value orders.
  2. Complex structures.
  3. Cases requiring comfort to be confirmed.
  4. Cases requiring repeated proportion adjustments.
  5. Pieces such as rings and bracelets where body sizing is especially important.

Silver models cost more than wax models, but they more closely approximate the actual feel of wear.

What is hand prototyping?

Hand prototyping is when the craftsperson directly creates the model or metal structure by hand, suitable for high jewellery, complex artistic forms, special gemstone shapes, or works that cannot be fully standardised.

Advantages:

  1. It leaves more of a handmade trace and artistic expression.
  2. It can be adjusted immediately for special gemstones.
  3. Suitable for one-of-one fine jewellery.

Limitations:

  1. Takes longer.

  3. Requires very high experience from the craftsperson.

What should the client confirm at the prototyping stage?

The client does not need to understand software or craftsmanship, but should confirm:

  5. Whether it catches on clothing.

  2. At the model confirmation stage, you must review the side profile, height, shank thickness, and gemstone protection, not just the front view.
  3. The consultant should explain in advance the difference between the wax model and the finished piece, to avoid misunderstanding.
  4. If major changes are requested after the model has been approved, the fee and lead time should be re-confirmed.

FAQ

Does every bespoke piece need a model?

Not necessarily. Simple designs can be made directly, while complex pieces, high-value centre stones, or special structures are best modelled first.

Will the CAD rendering and the finished piece be exactly the same?

Not exactly. The finished piece will be influenced by the metal, gemstones, polishing, setting, and hand finishing.

Can the wax model be tried on?

Some can, but wax is fragile and does not represent the final weight or feel. Trial fitting should focus on proportion and height.

Is the model an extra charge?

It depends on the order policy and complexity. Celeste should explain at quotation stage whether the model fee is included.
