Why are jewellery certificates important?

Jewellery value depends heavily on expert judgement. Most consumers cannot tell by eye alone whether a diamond is natural, whether a sapphire has been heated, whether an emerald has significant oiling, or whether a ruby’s origin opinion is reliable.

The value of a laboratory report lies mainly in five areas:

  1. Confirming gemstone identity, such as natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, moissanite, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and so on.
  2. Recording key parameters such as weight, dimensions, colour, clarity, cut, fluorescence, refractive index, specific gravity, and so forth.
  3. Disclosing treatments such as heat treatment, oiling, diffusion treatment, dyeing, filling, and more.

Common laboratory report types

Diamond grading report

Usually records the diamond4C, fluorescence, proportions, dimensions, clarity plot, girdle inscription, and related information. It is suitable for natural diamonds and some lab-grown diamonds, though report formats may differ between laboratories for natural and lab-grown stones.

Coloured gemstone identification report

Usually records the gemstone species, whether it is natural or synthetic, weight, dimensions, colour, transparency, treatment, and sometimes an origin opinion.

Finished jewellery report

Used for already mounted rings, necklaces, earrings, and other finished pieces. It can record gemstone and metal information in the finished item, but the scope of testing may be less complete than for loose stones because of setting obstruction.

Precious metal assay report

Used to confirm the content of gold, platinum, silver, and other precious metals, such as pure gold, 18K gold, platinum, and so on.

Appraisal report / insurance valuation document

Used for insurance, asset records, or secondary-market reference. It is not the same type of document as a laboratory identification report and should not be confused with one.

What can a laboratory report not judge for you?

A laboratory report cannot fully judge aesthetics for you.

The same 1-carat G-colour VS2 diamond will have a completely different final character when placed in a six-claw classic setting, a French-style slim shank, a bezel minimalist setting, or a vintage Art Deco design. The laboratory report records parameters, but it does not tell you which design suits the wearer best.

A laboratory report also cannot fully judge whether the price is reasonable.

Price also depends on the sourcing channel, market supply and demand, brand service, design complexity, setting workmanship, after-sales support, and scarcity.
